Painting Walls: Quick Transformation With Great Impact

Hardly any renovation measure delivers such impressive results as painting walls. An outdated, tired-looking room transforms within a weekend into a modern, inviting home. Whether you want to paint white walls to create a bright, friendly space, or paint a wall pattern to add a decorative accent – before-and-after comparisons consistently show how profoundly a fresh coat of paint can change a room's atmosphere. The clean transition of wall painting to the ceiling and the precise wall painting with edge ensure a professional result in these transformations.

Decorative Coatings: Wall Design With Character

For those who want to go beyond classic wall painting, decorative coatings offer exciting alternatives for individual wall design. Micrometal is a decorative metal plaster for walls that creates a unique, shimmering metal effect with a textured surface. Concrete Effect is a synthetic resin-modified, fibre-reinforced filler for walls and tiles that replicates the look of raw, industrial concrete. Microcement is a versatile two-component design plaster for walls, floors and furniture that offers a seamless, durable concrete finish in various grain sizes.

Why Painting Walls Is the Right Choice

Painting walls offers numerous advantages over other renovation methods. A fresh coat of paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to fundamentally transform the appearance of a room. Modern wall paints are breathable and moisture-regulating, contributing to a healthier indoor climate. Lime paint, for example, absorbs CO₂ during curing and acts as a natural moisture regulator. Latex paint is particularly suitable for damp rooms such as bathrooms and cellars, as it is washable and mould-resistant. Those wishing to paint wall patterns or add decorative accents benefit from the versatility of modern paints – from matt finishes to metallic effects. Painting requires no elaborate preparation and can be easily carried out even by ambitious DIY enthusiasts.

Questions & Answers

How do you properly apply wall paint and latex paint when painting walls?

chevronBottom

First, protect all areas that should not be painted with protective sheeting and masking tape. Mix the wall paint thoroughly and add your WB pigment to colour it – only the Polar White variant is already pre-tinted. Apply the paint and allow it to dry. We recommend approximately 2 coats. For a clean transition between wall and ceiling painting, you should paint the ceiling surfaces first and then the walls. Remove the masking tape before the paint has dried completely.

How many coats are necessary?

chevronBottom

Two coats are required for even coverage and durability. In some cases, particularly with old or highly absorbent substrates, a third coat may be necessary.

What is the minimum temperature required when painting?

chevronBottom

Wall paint, latex paint, lime paint and the metallic brush effect must be applied at a minimum of +8 °C (substrate, room and paint temperature). Applying the paint below this minimum temperature may lead to problems with coverage and drying.

Do I need a primer before painting?

chevronBottom

A primer is not strictly required with our wall paints. However, on highly absorbent or porous surfaces, a deep-penetrating primer may be advisable to ensure even colour uptake.

How much paint do I need per m²?

chevronBottom

Consumption depends on the paint chosen: wall paint approx. 120 g/m², latex paint approx. 120 g/m², effect paint approx. 130 g/m² and lime paint approx. 120–150 g/m² per coat. On rough or highly absorbent surfaces, consumption may be higher.

What is better for painting white walls: wall paint or latex paint?

chevronBottom

Both wall paint and latex paint are high-quality paints and are suitable for painting interior walls. Latex paint is particularly suitable for damp rooms such as bathrooms and cellars, as it is washable and breathable.

How do you apply limewash paint correctly?

chevronBottom

Ensure the surface is clean and free from imperfections. Prime if necessary with Polar White wall paint. Mix 2 kg of lime paint powder with 4 L of water and 100 g of WB pigment. Apply the lime paint with a fine bristle brush using cross movements. Work wet-in-wet and blend the edges of each section. Allow the first coat to dry for at least 3 hours before applying the next coat. We recommend at least two coats for the typical limewash paint effect.

What are the benefits of limewash paint?

chevronBottom

Limewash paint is breathable, absorbs CO₂ during curing, acts as a natural moisture regulator and is free from harmful chemicals. This makes it an excellent choice for a healthy indoor climate.

Can I apply lime paint to already painted walls?

chevronBottom

Yes, it is possible to apply lime paint to already painted surfaces. To do so, follow the procedure for applying lime paint to previously painted areas. When painting walls with edges, pay attention to carefully applied masking tape to achieve clean edges.

How do I clean my tools after painting walls?

chevronBottom

For water-based paints such as wall paint, latex paint and lime paint, brushes, rollers and other accessories can be cleaned easily with water directly after use. It is important to clean the tools immediately after painting, before the paint dries.
